Determination
Determination, while based on the true story of a Black woman named Florence Nyachwo, is a work of fiction, with all characters being fictional. She prefers to be called Florence, which is used consistently throughout the narrative.
Florence, initially from Uganda, relocated to the UK in July 1999. This was a significant shift in her life and a period of transition as she settled into a new country. So, her story explores the uncertainties and anxiety that surfaced when she, from a different cultural background, moved to a new country and tried to integrate into its different culture.
Several years later in the UK, on the suggestion of her friend Gloria, Florence found a romantic partner, a white man named David. This was on her second attempt. Being a Black woman and marrying into a white family, Florence faced various challenges, including dealing with potential prejudice and microaggressions from in-laws, and experienced societal pressures and stereotypes. These challenges manifested in different ways, from subtle slights to overt hostility, but luckily, they didn't impact her relationship with her partner, David.
Florence's strong determination was crucial in empowering her to conquer and manoeuvre negative attitudes directed towards her, enabling her to persist through challenging times to achieve her goal.
