Marcus returns to the place where he won his freedom from Gregor, a man of unnatural abilities. Gregor, once a victim of his parent's abuse chose to hate those who are most like the crying child he once was, torturing those who show the strength he never had. Having kept Marcus for thirteen years, unable to make Marcus beg, Gregor takes his life. Blood is shared and for Marcus, a new nightmare begins. Dark Night begins with Marcus' return to the place where he won his freedom. Twenty years have passed and Marcus is prepared to face Gregor, kill him before he can take another and once again, he is forced to fight for his freedom. Near death, he is rescued by Maddy, the little girl, now a woman, he once rescued.
Haunted by nightmares of her close encounter with a terrible death, Maddy has not led an ordinary life. Remembering the man who saved her, she rescues Marcus, taking him into her life. Maddy sees the humanity Marcus clings to, the pain he tries to hide and the anger that drives him on and grows to love him. She knows she must help destroy the monster that shaped both their lives.
Enlisting the aid of her brother, Judson, they begin to hunt Gregor. They are soon joined by the Chief Daniels of Norwich Police Department. As the hunt continues, the death toll rises and a city grows fearful. With each battle Marcus sees that he is not only fighting Gregor, he is also fighting for his soul, for Maddy's life and those who have come to mean so much to him.
