Dads Army: Up the Big Smoke

For those of you who are familiar with Dads army you will know that James Beck died soon after the making of Things that go bump in the night episode. His absence was explained away in the next episode, The Recruit, where he had sent an absence letter to Mr Mainwaring, and which Private Pike had conveniently placed on the floor where he would have normally stood on parade.

It led me to think, what was Private Walker actually doing in London, ? Could there be another story here, to explain away his absence and if so what is that story? Would he return to Walmington-on-sea and take his rightful place with the rest of the platoon? In this alternative vision, of course, anything can happen, and it does. Not only is Private Walker very much alive, but at the bequest of his majesty's government he was undertaking a dangerous assignment, which, if followed through and successful would assist England in its hour of need and of course earn the respect of not only the Platoon but also Captain Mainwaring, his superior officer. Does he succeed? Well, that is something you need to find out dear reader.

I have used some of the words from the Dad's Army episode, The recruit, in order to blend in my story with David Crofts and Jimmy Perry's story. I give full acknowledgement to their contribution and copyright and for their inspiration which made Up the Big Smoke possible.
