The spectrum of religious experience and spirituality in contemporarypostmodern, postsecular and religiously pluralized Western culture isextremely broad. Is it possible to trace the development, the shifts, breaches and patterns of religious and spiritual transcendence in thisdeeply diversified context? In this volume, a heuristic model of fourtypes of transcendence is proposed and discussed. The four types areimmanent transcendence, radical transcendence, radical immanence andtranscendence as alterity. Of each type two examples from contemporarycultural discourses, ranging from theology and philosophy to popularculture are presented and the viability of the model as such iscritically assessed. The pairs of examples show how different kinds ofcontent are given to the same type. By illuminating this dialecticbetween formal categories of notions of transcendence and their specificcontent in various areas of culture, the book can aid furtherexploration of the preconditions, possibilities, difficulties andlimitations of relating to and expressing (a) sense(s) of transcendencewithin a postmodern world.
