Todd Whitney is a brilliant adolescent from Missouri who comes to stay with relatives on Loopback Ridge for the summer. His aunt, uncle, and three cousins are one of two families who still live on the Ridge.

Todd and his relatives are descendants of Chuck and Susanne Whitney, who lived there in the early part of the twentieth century, and Amanda Faraday, one of their first ancestor to live on the family farm.

Todd learns the family legend of Amanda's finding, hiding, and then losing the Blue Crystal, after which she was followed by strange, small, hairy, brown creatures.

With trepidation, Todd's uncle, Jake Whitney (Zack's father), finally concedes to lead the boys-along with Zack's two close friends from the Ridge-on an outing into the ominous woods to "search" for the long-lost Blue Crystal of family lore.

Todd does not realize that the Blue Crystal has been summoning him as replacement for the Great Immortal (yet blundering) Wizard, Mortimer, ever since his arrival at the Whitney Farm.

No one could image the spine-tingling consequences that result from this ill-fated outing!
