A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE HORRORS OF WWII

This book picks up where Jan Yoors' THE GYPSIES left off. I would strongly recommend reading that book first to get proper insight into the traditional life of the European Rom. While CROSSING was equally good in its own right, the two could not be more different. THE GYPSIES is a book that is mostly upbeat, and although it tells of various troubles that the Rom encounter in everyday life, those troubles are miniscule when compared to the troubles faced in this book. The Rom were marked for termination by the nazis because they were deemed racially impure, just as the Jews. 500,000 to 600,000 Rom were killed by the nazis. CROSSING chronicles the author's experiences in recruiting other Rom in the anti-war campaign, their successes against the occupiers, and their losses. Just as THE GYPSIES did, it conveys much Rom wisdom, a lot of their history, and much of their inside life, which most outsiders have never seen. Yet it also tells a story that is as dark and horrible as one could imagine. At times it's hard to believe that the author could have survived to write the story. I highly recommend reading this book, as long as it's read in the appropriate order in the series of books. There is a lot we can learn in modern times from traditional Rom life. Enjoy!
