The Christmas edition

Whoever compiled this book certainly had access to some wonderful magazine archives. The ninety-five covers included are a delight and presented in a way that can hardly be improved. Though all the covers feature the festive season they are collected into nine sections and shown chronologically. The latest cover is Holiday from 1956 and the selection wisely includes no photographic versions. Popular consumer titles from the past, like the Saturday Evening Post, McCall's or Good Housekeeping are here with their leading illustrators: Leyendecker, Rockwell, Flagg or Dohanos for example but also you'll see long forgotten titles and equally unknown artists who create the magic of the season beautifully. The covers are one to a page, printed in 175dpi with a light grey border to help define the cover area of those titles that were printed on white paper. Interestingly there are several like this from decades ago, it's something contemporary magazines rarely do now. I thought this was a lovely book and my only disappointment was that it didn't have twice as many Yuletide covers. Perhaps a future edition could concentrate on the forties and fifties with covers from the big circulation weeklies: Saturday Evening Post, Colliers and Look. ***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.
