Coping with COVID explains to the little ones and the not-so-little ones what the pandemic is and how it affects our lives. It shares how severe this virus is and how hope and love are most needed to get through this without losing our collective minds. It's a guide on how to keep safe, cope with stay home orders, COVID testing, what happens when a child gets sick and that it's okay to feel sad and mad during this challenging time. Hope, not hate with a healthy amount of humor, is the message.I started to write on the 27th of July, 2020, while flying through Tokyo, California, Texas (Houston and then San Antonio) to pick up my kids who spend summer with their mom in the mainland. Then flew back through Houston, L.A., Honolulu, and back home to Guam. Throughout, I saw children struggling with masks and flights where food was not available. So with a notebook and my belief that I can launch a book within a couple of weeks, I rushed to get this out. I borrowed a lot from my favorite philosophers, Dr. Seuss and Mr. Rogers, hearing their voices in my head, spoken by Mr. Tom Hanks, of course. As I write this, I went from a forced two-week quarantine to furlough and now an island-wide stay home order. I started creating like a child, excited about my long-shelved chalk pastels. I hope you enjoy reading this to your little ones and explaining how serious things are right now. Until then, please wear your mask, wash your hands, and please keep your distance. Let's all get through this pandemic safe and well.
