A Must

If you teach the Bible, make sure you have this book. It will not only point you in the right direction as far as reliable commentaries, but by doing so it will also save you money. Few things are worse than spending hard earned cash on books that only disappoint! The author is one of the most humble men I have ever met and he has actually taken the time to read every book he comments on. The breakdown between exegetical, expositional, and devotional commentaries is very helpful. It is also nice that he tells you the writer's theological persuasion. Buy this book for yourself and for every pastor you know. The update is available.

Great book with forthcoming update....

Just got an email back from Dr. Rosscup who says the update is at the publisher. It might be available as early as June 2003. He says they've added nearly 350 commentaries to the mix. This is great news for all of us who have been using this treasure since the early 90's!

A Scholarly Guide to Commentaries of the Bible

This is the single best guide to exegetical, expository and devotional commentaries from a conservative evangelical perspective that takes the inspiration and authority of the Bible seriously. This work is thorough, covering as many as 30 or more commentaries for each book of the Bible. The annotations are not skimpy and superficial glosses as in other treatments. Running often an entire paragraph in length, they yield a nuanced and weighty assessment of the commentaries under review. The author has obviously spent many years pouring over these commentaries. The fruit of his studied interaction with these texts is seen in his judicious and discriminating evaluations. The annotated remarks disclose a competent mastery of the critical issues that confront modern biblical scholarship. His rating system for ranking the chief commentaries for each of the 66 books of the Bible (as well as for the Pentateuch and the Minor Prophets treated as a unit) found on pages 3-15 is most helpful to the serious student of the sacred text.
