Chrysalis is derived from a 1940s true-life experience recorded in a local history. In this story, names, locations and some events have been fictionalised to protect privacy.
In tropical Australia, a young woman in the throes of first love is struck by the Biblical disease of "the unclean" leprosy, then incurable.
She is wrenched from her family and transported to an island leper colony. Here, she is sustained by her conviction that one day her nightmare will end.
In the most serendipitous of ways, and close to the truth of the actual event, the nightmare does end.
Suffice to say that first love, true love, overcomes all.
