If you REALLY love your dog, read this book!

Do you love your dog? How much? Could you be loving him to death? The current explosion of obesity in America extends to our canine friends also and I'm afraid that WE, as dog's best friend, are the culprit, NOT our pet. Sure, I know, Oscar the dachshund is SO cute when he's "sitting pretty" for you and rolling those eyes in that flirtatious way that is so hard to resist while he tosses his head backwards and points to the food source with his long snout. That is no excuse, however, for filling his bowl beyond the proper nutritional level. He can't help it that he just happens to love to eat! It's his instinct, and it's OUR responsibility to make sure that we moderate his food supply and nourish our pet with loads of love and attention instead. Don't think that by reading the back of the dog food bag you are going to get quick and easy answers, either. Regulations for the labeling of dog food are more lax than human food labeling, which leaves a lot to be desired in itself. For example, if you buy the Chicken or Beef Meal "Formula", "Dinner", "Platter", "Entrée" or "Recipe", did you know that the protein requirement is only 25%? Also, what IS "meal"? Fortunately for us dog lovers (and in Seattle our numbers are legion) a new book has been published by veterinarian Ernie Ward, founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, to explain obesity in dogs and how WE, the owners, can bring our dog's weight down to its correct size. Book chapters cover topics such as how to decipher cryptic pet food labels, develop a weight loss plan, make dog meals from nutritious recipes, motivate our pet to exercise, and even insure that his "end" result will be well-formed, smell good, and scoop up easily! The book "Chow Hounds", published in 2010 by Health Communication, Inc., explains the medical consequences of obesity in dogs, how to rule out other medical problems, and increase the odds that you'll be spending additional years of quality time together. Dr. Ernie thoroughly breaks down our dogs' nutritional requirements, marketing tricks employed by the pet food industry, and how we can lobby for better labeling. Buy this book right away and give your dog the gift of better health and a longer life. Don't be surprised if you start eating better yourself after reading this inspiring and heart-felt book by a veterinarian who obviously loves dogs and is pained to see them suffer as a result of us loving them too much.
