Why can't learning math be fun?

As one who has always enjoyed learning math, I often wonder why many others hate and avoid it. Hughes helps to explain the aversion many people feel for the subject. It's the way we teach it, not the subject itself. I remember playing lots of card games and being exposed to numbers and figures in fun situations before attending school. Numbers have become associated with fun for me. Einstein was taught to treat doing math as a detective game. I wish everyone involved in math education would read this book, reflect upon it and apply its concepts. Our children deserve a better relationship with the subject.
