Charlie-256

By Lamar D. Vine

First day. New FOB. A simple task.

Private Daniel Scott is told he cannot mess it up. Relieve the listening post. Watch. Report. Answer when command calls him Charlie-256.

They give him more than a rifle. A helmet that sees behind him. An AI in his ear named ALICE. Two drones the size of coins. She asks his favorite color. She asks about his mother. She keeps him on a blue line across empty ground.

Then the line is wrong. The ground drops. The comms die. Something moves that his eyes will not hold.

The private he was sent to relieve is still talking. Scott follows the gold marker because that is what he was told to do.

Charlie 256 is a war story about a first mission that was never meant to be survived - and a voice that already knows how it ends.

Contains wartime violence and death.
