Panama, 1991.
A twenty-one-year-old threw the shortest enlistment he could find and landed as Military Police investigator Eagle 12 - Coco Solo barracks, Fort Davis, a year after Just Cause. He wanted a desk and a way out. He got weekends on call, a dying air conditioner, and a voice pager that would not let him sleep.
Every dawn he sits up like a drowning man and tells himself the same lie: it is going to be a good day.
Home will not leave him alone. An ex-wife. A toddler he can barely afford to hear on the phone. Money leaving Panama faster than he can smoke. The jungle presses the windows. The barracks throw a going-away party. He keeps moving because if he stops, the dread catches him.
Eagle 12 is one weekend in a borrowed life - duty, heat, women, and the quiet math of how many months are left.
