Catch as Catch Can

What starts innocently enough as an underage quest for cigarettes turns into a full-blown citywide man hunt for the ever-elusive Gingerbread Man. Careening ice cream trucks, wistful pig girls and sharp -- eyed wolves combine in this riotous fable. Through all the injuries and destruction, the story reveals the sometimes tense, sometimes tender bonds of family, of friends, and of lovers.

Funny and Whimsical

Greg Cook is known for the curly, fun elegance of his simple, stripped down drawing style, usually showcased in hard-to-find minicomics and high-end, artsy comix anthologies. "Catch As Catch Can" is Cook's first real-live solo book, I think, and it does not disappoint. The story and the art both are a bit more complex here than in some of Cook's other stories. The pictures pulse with swirls and wacky shifts of perspective. One main character is a Gingerbread Man... driving an ice-cream truck... and smoking cigarettes. Suffice to say, he is not the best influence on the youngsters who patronize his truck. Eventually we are pulled into a car chase with the cops. This story is sometimes a bit edgey and is meant for adults and older kids, preferably with a slightly twisted sense of humor.Greg Cook is a young, up-and-coming alternative comic artist with a literary and sometimes historical bent. Here we get nothing but good old fun. Fans of quality non-superhero comics owe it to themselves to check him out. A recommended romp.
