An outrageously funny and strangely moving novel that reveals as much about doctors and the medical system as Catch-22 did about war. Fast, funny, and terrifying true-to-life, this darkly comic novel about three interns coming of age in the chaotic hell of a big-city hospital is destined to win raves.
As a physician, I found this book highly entertaining, but I am confident that a wider audince will enjoy it also. It combines an insider's perspective on hospitals and medical education with superb writing. It is not another update of "House of God" (which I also liked), but happens to be a fine novel set in a teaching hospital.
An excellent read

Excellent book - quick paced journey through a year of loss, yearning, anger, reconcilliation and eventual personal growth. The author moves seamlessly between lyricism and simple declarative narration - between pure observation and honest introspection, but the narrative voice is never lost. The setting is the narrator's internship year at a major hosital - wherein he becomes what he has set-out to become: a healer. But the road is not what he expects. Instead it is a journey reminiscent of Dante and Homer. The characters are memorable - especially Goldman (the chief resident), Delia (the siren of the oddyssey), and Rulo (wheelchair-bound oracle in the guise of a homeless psychotic). I recommend it wholeheartedly.
