BADLANDS LEGEND - SAGA OF THE CONOVERS #2

I read the original covered paperback of Badlands Legend with the running horse. Not as many characters in this book as in the first. But an excellent story with a long journey involved. Yale Conover is about 26 and roaming the Badlands hopeing to find someone who might know his father, Clay Conover. Junior Conover claims that Clay joined the Badlands outlaws. At 16 Yale approached Cara Mckinnon and her father one evening wanting to marry her - when her father refused quite nastily Yale took off, leaving Misery showing up over the years occasionally to see his sister, Kitty and Aaron. Yale has been making a very good living at his gambling and over the years has become a Legend to some folks and helping other when they needed it. He was running, at the time, with the Fenner gang - known for their robberies and killing. At those times you would find him in some saloon making money an easier way [for him]. Now the Army is after Fenner and they decide to backtrack to a ranch they passed that had only a widow and her children visible. Yale take a midnight shift at guarding for the gang and takes off to warn the widow. He decides that after warning her he was taking off for parts unknown because Fenner would be after him with a vengence. Whoa! Imagine his shock when he discovers that the widow he is trying to save is his Cara McKinnon except she is now Mrs. Evans with two sons, Cody, 7 or 8 and Seth, who is 5 or 6. Seth hasn't talked since his father died. Cara doesn't trust Yale at first but she will do anything to save her sons. Now begins a trail of discovery and regaining of trust for Cara and Cody and for Yale a journey towards rediscovering and reawakening of his love for Cara. They are on the run from the Fenner gang. After a run in with the Fenner gang and Cara nursing a wounded Yale they end up in each others arms and decide to make the trip back to Misery, South Dakota. [Ha! she should have gotten pregnant] The family reunion of Yale and Kitty and Aaron was heartwarming and we bump into Gabe and Billie again [she still works at the Red Dog saloon]. The Red Dog is the focal point for payback and the final meeting with the Fenner gang. Great plot, excellent characters, still no answer about Clay, and a mellowing of the Legend, I had to chuckle when Cody asks what a legend is. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --m - turning out to be an excellent trio.
