Beloved children's poet Jack Prelutsky and acclaimed illustrator Paul O. Zelinsky have created a tour de force picture book of epic proportions and infinite appeal It's pouring. The wind is blowing down trees. Awful Ogre's rattlesnake wakes him. He tickles his piranha, scatters his rats, and disengages his leeches. Another wonderful day is about to begin. Awful Ogre, huge, hungry, horrible--and totally lovable, will steal the heart of every reader. Larger than life--larger, in fact, than all other ogres, Awful Ogre packs into one day enough excitement, imagination, emotion, and sheer ebullience to last most of us a lifetime. New York Public Library's "One Hundred Titles for Reading and Sharing," a School Library Journal Best Book, and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book
What a terrific, fun, lively book! As much fun for me and my husband to read as it is for our son to have it read to him. Even though he is still small, he loves the rhyming cadence of it and the pictures. A nice change from Dr. Seuss - I just love Awful Ogre! Especially when he dances...or courts a grrrrl...or goes out to dinner...This book would be a terrific addition to any childs library.
An Awfully Exciting Adventure...

Jack Prelutsky, author of more than 30 artistic creations, takes the reader on a journey through the daily rituals of an ogre's pleasantly gross life. Prelutsky describes all of the ogre's activities from sunrise, when his pet rattlesnake wakes him, until late into the night, when he has a nightmare about a beautifully tranquil place. Using fabulous double-page spreads, Zelinsky illustrates how the ogre enjoys a violent storm, tends to his garden of carnivorous roses and overblown mold and takes supper at a local restaurant where his titanic appetite is satisfied with triple helpings of everything (including the silverware, plates and tablecloth). The 18 rhythmic and witty verses are brought to life with remarkable detail using watercolor and pen and ink. This combination of gruesome humor, along with the realistic snapshots of the ogre's life, will provide many hours of entertainment and enjoyment to all those who are ready to experience the adventure. Everyone will fall in love with this oversized and grotesque, but playful, ogre as they scour each marvelous and explosive work of art! (Ages 6 and older)
Expand Child's Vocabulary

This book has great illustrations, like the skunk in the Ogre's nose which captivated my 2 and 5 year old children. Even better however, it has the vocabulary to expand and challenge young minds. A great choice.
One Exciting, Imaginative Day....

Come spend the day with Awful Ogre, from the moment his rattlesnake and buzzard awaken him, until the end of his day when he snuggles upon his stony pillow atop his rocky bed. He's huge and horrible and totally engaging as we watch him groom himself, eat his meals, write a letter, watch TV, dance, play music, dream and much, much more. Jack Prelutsky and Paul Zelinsky have authored a collection of delightful, clever and humorous poems, that really capture the essence of the pre-adolescent mind and young imaginations will soar as they tag along and spend an exciting day with Awful Ogre. Mr Prelutsky's poetry is full of rhyme, rhythm, energy and motion and complemented by Mr Zelinsky's marvelously bold and expressive illustrations and youngsters will enjoy poring over the artwork and finding all the special little details in each picture. Perfect for kids 7 and older, Awful Ogre's Awful Day is a silly, amusing, inventive treasure and a wonderful read aloud book the entire family can share and enjoy together; a book you definitely don't want to miss.
Gross Fun For Your Favorite Kid

Prelutsky and Zelinsky invite you along to experience Awful Ogre's awful day in verse. The poems and illustrations are clever and at times tickle-your-funny-bone revolting. I personally love the ode to Awful Ogre's loved one. This book is especially great for any kid who had a fun time with the movie, "Shrek." The illustrations are full of humor that emphasize the silliness of the poems while relishing the good dirty fun to be had by all who turn the pages. Prelutsky is sure to inspire some fun poem writing while Zelinsky will encourage kids to have fun with their crayons. Expect this to be a favorite with your booger obsessed kid.
