Avatar: The Last Airbender – Smoke and Shadow Part One (Fire Lord Zuko and Mai Team Up Again)

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Smoke and Shadow Part One begins with Mai’s father, Ukano, being visited by a group of possible spirits called the Kemurikage in the middle of the night. Initially, I didn’t connect the dots and realize that Ukano is Mai’s father. Also, to me, this group of Kemurikage appears to be humans using some type of smoke machine, trying to act like spirits. Because I don’t think spirits worry about human political issues like who will become Fire Lord. The mimicking Kemurikage are intent on Ukano moving his plan forward. The next day, Ukano informs the New Ozai Society that Zuko will return home with his family. It is then that the New Ozai Society will attack them. When Ukano is alone, a young man named Kei Lo reports his thoughts about their plan. Meanwhile, Aang and Kiyi have a blast riding the Flying Dolphin-Fishes while Sokka, Katara, and Appa watch them from the ship. Zuko, Ursa, and Noren join them on deck. Ursa compliments Zuko’s achievements. It’s funny how Zuko tries to act all grown up, saying, “Mom, please. I’m the Fire Lord now.” Zuko speaks energetically about showing his mother her old home. Zuko’s oblivious to Ursa’s cold hands, indicating that she’s nervous, but Noren knows better. Ursa freaks out when she sees Kiyi on the Flying Dolphin-Fish with Aang. Aang and Katara try to assure her that Kiyi was never in danger. Kiyi breaks away from Ursa and only wants to be around Noren or Zuko or the rest of Team Avatar. It’s heartbreaking for Ursa, but I had a feeling Kiyi wouldn’t react well to Ursa changing faces and minds. Hopefully, Kiyi will become as affectionate with Ursa as she was with Noriko over time. In another city, Ty Lee visits Mai’s mother, Michi, Mai’s little brother, Tom-Tom, Mai’s Aunt Mura, and Mai. Michi moved her children to a new town because Ukano only thought about politics. Mai and Ty Lee catch up about Zuko, his family, and Azula possibly lurking in the shadows, plotting her revenge against her old friends. A boy called Kei Lo has a crush on Mai and buys her flowers from Mai’s family flower shop. But when Ukano sent Kei Lo to Mai to invite her to the New Ozai Society, she refused to join them and left with her mother and brother. Kei Lo secretly meets Mai to give her information about the New Ozai Society. Mai’s motive is to protect Zuko, even from a distance, and Ty Lee’s job is to determine whether Kei Lo is lying. Ty Lee’s in shock when Mai calls Kei Lo babe. Back on the Fire Nation ship, Aang, Katara, and Sokka agree to leave the boat to give Zuko some family bonding time. Zuko thanks his friends for everything they’ve done for him before they fly on Appa. They plan to see each other again in a week at the Yu Dao’s Inaugural Celebration. Zuko is happy until he spots Ursa crying and confronts her. The scene switches back to Mai, Ty Lee, and Kei Lo discussing the New Ozai Society’s big plans to return Ozai to the throne. After Kei Lo gives Mai and Ty Lee all the information, he leaves. Ty Lee disapproves of Mai’s deceitful actions. On the ship, Zuko and Ursa discuss Zuko’s sisters, Kiyi and Azula. When Zuko touches Ursa’s ice-block hands, he plans to take her below deck. However, a messenger hawk intercepts them. Zuko reads the message and makes new plans. The next day, Zuko, Noren, Ursa, and Kiyi await their submarine with their escort of Iroh and the Kyoshi Warriors. Suki comes aboard, and Kiyi asks if Zuko thinks Suki is pretty. It seems that the writer is still hinting at the possible relationship between Zuko and Suki. I’ll admit that I’m not a massive fan of that potential relationship. Anyway, the reunion between Zuko, Ursa, and Iroh is sweet. Iroh plans to be the decoy so Zuko can safely sneak his family into the palace. Iroh’s a nut with his angst face and waving. While a crowd welcomes “Zuko” into the city, the Kyoshi Warriors spot the submarine. On the backs of the Komodo Rhinos, the Kyoshi Warriors escort the carriage containing Zuko and his family. At the
