Dr. Irwin outlines the origins of parapsychological research and critically reviews investigations of extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, poltergeist phenomena, near-death and out-of-body experiences and apparitions and survival (sometimes called reincarnation). Also, criticisms by the skeptical are presented, and the status of parapsychology as a scientific enterprise is assessed.Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
I first borrowed this book form the University of Bergen when I started to read about parapsychology (I believe it was the fourth edition) and I now had to buy it. This book can help you to take your first step inside of parapsychology and to understand it. It has tasks and key words in the end of each chapter, something that can help you remember the text much better. If you want to start with parapsychology, buy this book!

The author is totally unbiased. He explains the parapsychology cosmos from various angles including science, religion, quantum physics and the occult. I found this book to be INDISPENSABLE. All those who are interested in parapsychology SHOULD buy this book. It is almost perfect. One of the very best books published in the last ten years.

A clearing in the forest

This is the most thorough and definitive Inroduction to Parapsychology I have seen. It is also the most objective work of its type which I have read besides Varieties of Anomalous Experience: Examining the Scientific Evidence. I recommend it highly and suspect that the true and observant Skeptic would as well. Yet the crafty and perjurious few that dwell amoungst the dens of "Skeptics" and "Conjurers" alike would not. Very fulfilling read!
Fairly objective overview of the subject...

This book is written with an academic, professional and reasonably impartial tone. The book doesn't try to convince you that psychic phenomenon are genuine. If there is an underlying message from the author of this book, it is that many parapsychologists are HONEST scientists, they take their work very seriously, and that parapsychology is not always synonymous with pseudoscience.
