Back on Earth, a young boy named Dillon is living with his family in Dublin. Dillon's family are down on their luck, and a rainy Irish summer is not helping matters. Dillon's mum suggests a part-time job, but Dillon is reluctant, and wonders when life will be fun again.

Tensheet has served the Doctor for decades, when he originally joined him from a small, little known planet called Earth.
The story begins with Tensheet's near disastrous efforts to capture a giant Snow Serpent, on a world made entirely of ice. Tensheet convinces the Doctor to take on a second apprentice, but secretly knows he will be training his own replacement.
