Great Book to Refresh Algebra Rules

It has been a while since I took a math course. This series of books is excellent. I have the Practical Math book also, and both are excellent. The books seem elementary initially, but that gave me some confident before getting into the more advanced topics.

Pretty Good Book

This book was recommended to me by an engineering teacher since he though my algebra was a little weak. There are many errors in the answer key, so the best idea is to learn to check your answers so you don't have to look in the back. It's great tool to use for review though. If you don't second-guess yourself you shouldn't have any trouble using this book as a self-teaching tool.

Lots Of Errors In Answer Key.

There are a lot of errors in the answer key (I have the 2nd edition); since this is a self-study book, the errors can be quite frustrating. The book is also a little bit watered-down, and doesn't cover some topics standard in most algebra texts. For example, factoring cubes is completely uncovered, so are roots larger than squares, and the section on graphing is very limited. The explanations can be a little bit lacking at times as well, and it would have been nice to see the the problems, not just answered, but solved in the answer key, this being a self study book. On the plus side, it's excellent at teaching the basics and building confidence. It is very well thought out, and the material is presented in a straightforward and logical way. If you are (like me) one of those people who approached math with trepidation, you will probably find this book a Godsend, but beware its shortcomings. And if you are planning on going on to pre-calculus with only this book as preparation, expect to be a little behind most of the other students, because of the concepts this book doesn't cover, or covers in a very stripped down way. Still, despite its faults, I like this book, and think it did its job: got a math-phobic person through basic algebra concepts without too much frustration.

Great Book!

I am planning to go to College as a mature student in Spring and really and truly needed to fully understand Algebra. Well this book is perfect. Step by Step. If you don't understand Algebra after studying this book, you really weren't paying attention. That and it's actually enjoyable. I also bought learn Geometry in 20 minutes a day. And I also feel the same way about that book.

written from a students perspective

stumbled on this book in a book store after searching for a book for my brother. he just cannot understand the concept well enough because the text he uses in school is written in a fashion that assumes you know some stuff i think a good book is written when an author explains to you like a "dummy" that helps alot i know that because i'm a math tutor. i have spent 6 hours reviewing the style of this book and it really impresses me of how simple and understanding can an author make algebra. I dont quiet remember if there were any big emphasis on exponentials which i think are important, but if i over look this i stand correction. Any way great book it has taught me alot of easier way to do problems. its also great for those who have taken algebra years ago and need a brush up. GO GET IT I'M SERIOUS
