Against All Odds: A Memoir

Dr. Ambrose Cato George, the South African author and poet, looks back at a long life filled with challenges and opportunities. Being raised in relative poverty and disadvantaged by the discriminatory educational system under apartheid did not prevent him from graduating and becoming a PhD. A chronic mental health disorder resulting in severe depression did not stop him from pursuing advanced studies in Great Britain under a scholarship. He subsequently became a teacher, then a headmaster, and became a pillar of support for his country's mental health sector. A one-time political activist, scholar, religious thinker and family man, he seems to have lived life to its fullest.

The memoir has two parts, "On My Own Terms" and "Depression and Stigma: Another Man's Country." Due to Dr. George's structured thinking and straightforward writing style, "Against All Odds" is not a very demanding read. The book is thoughtful, transparent and revealing. It is also motivational, especially for those who struggle with clinical depression, as it shows a path forward to a successful and gratifying life.
