Better Than I Was Expecting...

I came into "A Wise Man Sleeps" with trepidation, fresh from reading the sub-par "Bound Beauty". I wasn't expecting much, but I was willing to bet $5 that Takeuchi wouldn't mess up that badly again. Turns out I was right, and "Wise Man" was much better than I'd expected. The story's premise is that, after her mother's death and her father's abandonment, Miharu is left with huge debts and a mysterious ring. According to Rintaro, a weird man she meets on the street one day, the ring is "cursed" and will only bring about misfortune for the owner. Here's the part that I like best about Miharu: when faced with something like this, she yells "Even if I have more bad luck, I'll never get so lost I blame it on some stupid jewel!" That about sums up her character right there. Although she's been put through various hardships, she is determined to struggle through them on her own power. In the first chapter, problems with the mafia arise from Miharu's father's debts. Miharu decides, and it's actually a well thought out decision at the time, to swallow the ring so that no one can take it from her. After the business with the yakuza is through, it comes to light that Miharu has actually absorbed the Wise Man's stone. Because she's its "chosen master", Miharu can now see spirits and feel the presence of other "cursed" jewels. And so the story proper begins. I really liked this book, and I plan to buy the next one as soon as possible. The series is only two books long, so I hope the conclusion keeps up the fun pace the first book set.
