Gene Cox spent 40 years as a TV newsman, trying to figure out what was going on. In his later years, he reached some conclusions that seemed obvious but for the most part remained unsaid. After hearing repeatedly from friends that he was a curmudgeon, Cox figured they were probably right. So he decided to write down some of his more obscure thoughts and let the chips do whatever the chips wanted to do.

A Few Good Stories offers a sampling of those obscure thoughts, along with longer essays about Cox's experiences growing up as a rebellious Preacher's Kid in Appalachia. Bible burnings, alligator wrestling and the dangerous allures of mattress sales are all fair game for his acerbic skepticism.

Cox is also the author of several other nonfiction books, as well as five novels featuring Chandler Harris, a news anchor who solves murders when he's not reading a teleprompter.
