The Clan of the Cave Bear is the first of Jean M. Auel's internationally bestselling Earth's Children books. Born in 1936 in Chicago as Jean Marie Untinen, she grew up there and moved to Oregon as a young wife. Auel completed undergraduate studies at Portland State University and earned a M.B.A. at the University of Portland. In 1977 she began writing and researching European life in prehistoric times to develop the story that grew into The Clan of the Cave Bear. Her book was published in 1980, since then she has completed six books in the series. The recipient of many honors and awards, Auel was named an Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
