Born in Chicago in 1950, Mercedes Lackey graduated from Purdue University in 1972. The author of fantasy novels, many of which are interrelated, Lackey previously worked as an artist's model and in computer programming. She also has written lyrics and recorded science fiction folk music. Lackey was mentored by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and her first stories were published in Bradley's collections. Lackey's husband Larry Dixon has illustrated some books in the Valdemar saga and co-authored some of her books. She has also collaborated with, among others, Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Piers Anthony, and James Mallory. Lackey lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
