Zero

I was sitting up in my bed, still wearing the stupid hospital gown that left my big butt bare. It had been three weeks since I came back from the dead. I was feeling good. Better than good. I was filled with all kinds of nervous energy. They let me walk in the hallway but I really wanted to get outside and run. I was never much of a runner, but now I felt like I could run a marathon and win. I was really feeling anxious, no, trapped. I was a lab rat. They kept coming in and taking my blood and my urine.Gross.I had learned that I was the first to survive the virus. Actually, I was the only one to survive. That's why they were taking all the samples. The young doctor was some kind of virus expert and was convinced that I was the cure. A few times I had heard doctors and nurses referring to me as patient zero. Well patient zero wanted to help but patient zero wanted to go outside. So the next time they came in with their needles I folded my arms and told them I wanted to go outside. They said no. I got up, walked into the bathroom, locked the door and told the pretty young nurse where she could go in very colorful detail. It was while I was in the bathroom I noticed my reflection for the first time. I hadn't looked in the mirror because I was still getting sponge baths. I moved closer to the glass and stared at my face. The freckles were still there and so was the mass of red curls. But my dark brown eyes were now yellow, no, gold with black thin lines. My pupils were not round, but slit. Then it hit me. I had cat eyes. I screamed, jumping back from the image in the mirror. I was now some kind of freak. I couldn't stop screaming.Someone was banging at the door. I slid to the floor and cried like a baby.
