This volume catalogues the ceramic finds of excavations undertaken in the Zabid area, North Yemen from the early 1980s onwards. During the 1995 campaign, large quantities of 'mediaeval' pottery were found for the first time in good contexts. This new edition thus reflects pottery recording and analysis performed up to the end of the 1995 excavation season, for material dating to before the first Ottoman occupation of Yemen in the 16th century. The plates place similar vessels together, so that the pottery may be studied for its intrinsic worth, for what it says about consumer use and market forces, rather than simply to establish a site chronology. The excavation team's primary objective is to build up a picture of ceramic production technology and vessel function over time, making it possible to track the development of the ceramic industry in the Tihamah and facilitate recognition of changing patterns of social behaviour.
