An indigent mental patient, Tom lives in a dream inhabited by people who lived in Pagan Russia over a thousand years ago. Homeless and walking down a highway, he is taken into state custody in 1990's Northern Virginia, and his psychiatrist Andrew Schalberg slowly comes to believe that everything that Tom sees in his fantasy is instead real. He listens as the unconscious Tom recounts fantastical adventures in this early Slavic world that his patient could not possibly fake. As Schalberg's own personal life is falling apart, he is drawn ever deeper into Tom's delusions to the point that Schalberg stops giving anti-schizophrenic medicine to his patient so he can find out what will happen when Tom's narration finally comes to its violent climax. Little do they know that what Tom has to say and what Andrew hears will save them both ? or destroy them.
