love love love

i feel like many of the books i read don’t have serious love interests or actually decent partners so this was kind of refreshing in that sense. i think i have ptsd with annoying/common tropes from the past and i dont like the typical romance book so most things i read are just problematic people who can’t communicate, but this wasn’t the case. it had a bit of love (hence the second part of the title) without being annoying or cheesy or predictable.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

I experienced this story via audiobook and found it incredibly engaging. The narrative follows a protagonist grappling with a heavy mental health burden—primarily paralyzing anxiety—while navigating a life that feels stuck in survival mode. Between her staggering debt, a dilapidated living situation, and a toxic landlord, her world feels claustrophobic. The story doesn't shy away from the weight of grief following her mother’s death or the daily grind of an abusive restaurant job. However, the beauty of this book is in the momentum; a series of life-altering events forces a shift in her trajectory. Seeing her transition from having no future aspirations to achieving a successful writing career was deeply cathartic. It’s a testament to resilience, and I highly recommend it.

I love the way Lily King writes--approachable, thought-provoking, lovely without being overwrought. I've read it several times since my first read and have recommended it to so many friends who have also inhaled it. Really glad this book exists.

pleasantly surprised

Pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this and have been having a hard time putting my tongue on why I was so charmed by it. The urgency in this book is all but nonexistent, but you aren't truly looking for a problem to arise, as there are so many large problems..? There is one paragraph towards the end where a therapist tells the narrator that her problems aren't as manageable as she makes them seem, and this was a sort of vindication for me. This is difficult to accomplish, and this author makes it look easy. The first-person voice and the characterization make this narrator the kind that becomes a comfortable old friend and stays in your psyche.
