This book contains the reflections of fourteen older Hackney women, looking back on the early days of the Women's Liberation Movement and showing that our feminist activism is still relevant today. Our experiences include escaping abusive relationships, driving a bus, working with young women and girls, starting the first UK Black lesbian support group, campaigning against gender stereotypes, feminist publishing, starting a lesbian helpline, adopting children and so much more.
The Hackney HOWLers writing group is part of the national HOWL (History of Women's Liberation) project. HOWL is gathering material from women across the UK to record women's memories and the history of grassroots feminism before it is too late. Feminists of all generations will find much in this book to inform, amuse, and gain inspiration from.
