In 1642, in what would one day be known as Western Massachusetts, Sepoese a young Native American girl, travels westward with a handsome warrior and is taken captive by marauding Mohawk. She learns of a dangerous wolf spirit, Karonhiara-ken Okwaho who fights for revenge. She befriends the Mohawk and learns medicinal healing. Because of the strength she feels within, she takes the name Woronoke -the winding river, from her homeland. When warring Abenski attack she goes free but must find the courage to confront the sinister wolf spirit who bars her journey home. This story is based on the history of Westfield Massachusetts, named Woronoco by the Indigenous people. It encompasses the Pocomtuck Confederacy living in the Connecticut River Valley and the Mohawk of the Hudson River Valley.
