Chicago alderman Ruben Delgado is brutally murdered, and his sixteen-year- old stepson Bobby is arrested for the crime. Cindy Delgado, Bobby's mother, is at her wit's end, but not so much that she is willing to call in her ex for help.
Frank Decker, a disgraced Chicago cop, now ostracized to border control in Tecate for testifying against his dirty colleagues has lots of enemies in Chicago and a reputation for over-the-top tactics. Cindy fears that he would only make matters worse for their son. Frank, of course, can't stay away. When he shows, he bursts into courtrooms, pushes defense lawyers to their limits, threatens investigators. Nevertheless, as the facts of the case become more complicated and nuanced, Frank struggles to summon the sort of tact and discretion that this delicate case requires, but that has always been far beyond his reach. Fortunately, however, Frank is well familiar with the more sordid resources of the city and how to use them to his advantage.This is gritty Chicago in both its political and social underbelly.
