An Eye-Opening Look at Amish Cooking

I fell in love with this book's whimsical title, and thoroughlyenjoyed it's content. The book begins with a lengthy introduction tothe Amish, describing their customs, history, and beliefs. This is not your typical cook book, as it is full of photos of people and scenes, instead of food! I have tried several of the recipes, and love the hearty down-home cooking of this culture. It is real life cooking. I was intrigued with recipes such as "Lima Beans with Sour Cream" and "Spiced Cabbage", which aren't typical recipes for the region I live! I was also amused with the recipe titled "Shipwreck" (a combination of ground beef, "leftover rice", tomato sauce, and other ingredients), and one called "Oatmeal Pie #2". If you are looking for a gourmet cookbook with fancy recipes, this is not the book for you (although you may be surprised at some of the unique recipes that are listed). However, if you want a great resource for real life cooking, with ingredients that you have in your own pantry, along with some interesting information on the Amish people, you will enjoy (and USE) this book!
