This is a love story...About a killer, a brave woman, her husband, four children, and dozens of other people, whose lives were touched in one way or another during a journey from life, to death, and beyond. The killer was Stage IV melanoma cancer. Just the word "cancer" can create feelings of dread. This book is not primarily about those malfunctioning cells which, rather than dying, grow uncontrollably at an alarming rate and overwhelm the body's immune system. Rather, the focus is on an incredibly courageous woman, who loved life and threw herself into the battle for her life, with a determination that stunned even experienced cancer workers. I tell the story, a husband who became my wife's full-time caregiver and advocate. I wrote this book largely to honor Karen Allene Swan and document her journey for my children. I also wrote to testify about a God who cares, who loves us in the midst of our human experience, and who carried my family along during those long, turbulent, horrible, joyous, life-shaping years. Perhaps you don't believe in God or are alienated from him. I hope you will read it anyway because I tried to speak honestly about doubt, confusion, and fear in the midst of faith. What I do know is that the events during Karen's cancer journey years cannot be explained merely by reason, coincidence, fate, karma, serendipity, clever timing, or some quid pro quo with a distant Being. Something else was going on. Finally, to my great surprise, as I cared for my wife I experienced a changed life, an epiphany of sorts that brought me in a fresh way back to the Creator of all. Her life was taken; many others were transformed. It is the journey of a lifetime, compressed into seven short years. Karen Allene Swan was a beautiful woman, wife, mother, daughter, friend, and educator, with a confidence in God that extended to her last breath.
