Wolf Spirit: A Story of Wolves and Wonder

Wildlife biologist and endurance athlete Gudrun Pfl ger connects her study of wolves in western Canada with an intensely personal account of serious illness, recovery and return to the mountains.

In 2005, Pfl ger spent five weeks tracking and studying coastal wolves along the rugged Pacific coast of western Canada, work that later formed the basis of the Smithsonian Channel documentary A Woman Among Wolves. Between completing that research and the film's premiere, she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and a long recovery.

As she returned to the mountain environments of British Columbia and Alberta, wolves remained a powerful point of reference in the way she thought about endurance, fear and uncertainty. Her renewed fieldwork contributed to a second Smithsonian Channel documentary, Running With Wolves, and became part of a larger story about science, motherhood, wilderness and the effort to rebuild a life after illness.

Wolf Spirit combines personal memoir with close observation of wild wolves and the landscapes they inhabit, examining what humans seek in nature when ordinary assumptions about health, strength and control have been overturned.
