Haunting tale of deception and loneliness

This book haunted me for days after reading it and still comes to mind months after reading it. Being from Madison, I was intrigued with the story's setting - but that became "background" quickly as I was totally engrossed in the characters. As a fan of true crime, I found it a great read and well done. However, the lack of any direct information or interview from Barbara herself left many unanswered questions. I was dying to know more about her and still think about that today. Great read! I highly recommend this book! (but don't bother with the movie)

The Best True Crime I've read

I've read no fewer than 20 true crime books, and this one impressed me the most. Why? Because it never retreated into the more boring details of a countryside or the courtroom, just to make for a more voluminous book. The author (Karl Harter) cut to the quick and left me with a page-turner I couldn't put down. The seedier parts of the book were difficult to abide but maybe necessary to better reveal the utter lack of dignity and conscience in its worst characters. The author's grammar was flawless. And I appreciated his sensitivity to all the victims of Ms. Hoffman, including her parents. I like a good story-teller, and this author rose to the occasion. I wish he'd write more books. And I wish I could write like that.

Chilling mystery

Great read! Very captivating story and hard to believe it is all true. I am from Madison WI, so it was all the more interesting. Can't wait to see the movie too.

Great story - one fault

The story was great and will be a great movie soon. Mr. Harter certainly knew the content and presented the facts with precision. However, the S*X scenes read like a cheap paperback romance, and the transitions "in and out" of them were a distraction. Still I give this book two thumbs up as a sleeper, and a bargain at 44 cents.

Chilling

This book is a exact display of the horrible pain Barbra put her victims and their families through. My uncle was murdered by Barbra Hoffman, she will be put away for life. This book brings to life the chilling reality of why.
