An emotional rollercoaster

I picked this book up from the library by chance after reading the synopsis on the back cover. Though nowhere near as long as Vikram Seth's A Beautiful Boy, I had the same experience of feeling like I had developed a relationship with the characters, albeit not as deeply as with Vikram's book. So although I didn't want it to end, I didn't feel the same sense of loss that I did when I finished A Beautiful Boy. Although I found myself laughing out aloud as I read this sometimes it was almost laughter mixed with tears. I could hardly put it down but I felt anxious picking it up. For those of you who have watched the British television comedy series Faulty Towers it was a similar experience - hilarious and at the sometimes embarrassing at the same time Even though this book is set in India and explores life through a world view that might appear naive from a modern perspective, for me it plumed some of the depths of what it is to be human and feel worthwhile and the many ways we attempt to achieve it. A major theme in this book is the psychological concept of projection and I realise that I am projecting when I write this. We create our own hells through thinking. Congratulations to the author - its got me thinking about how to stop thinking.
