Book Overview

A contemporary novel from the author of A Woman of Substance about a young woman finding herself and her place in life, in love and in the world.

Valentine Denning is a courageous photojournalist on the frontline in Kosovo. Her colleagues - Tony Hampton and American Jake Newberg - are her comrades-in-arms, men whom she loves and trusts. One is her best friend; one her lover. In a nightmarish ambush, all three are shot, Tony fatally, and for Val an even worse nightmare begins.

For there are memories and lies - lies which force Val to find herself again by leaving her past life of heart-breaking war-danger for what seems like the gentler world of celebrity-shoots: but this too brings danger - a famous artist whose reputation as a playboy does not steel against a powerful attraction. Valentine's sense of searching for something leads her to retrace paths which she thought she had left behind.

This review refers to the audiobook

I was a bit hesitant to listen to this book after reading so many negative reviews here. Maybe it translates differently on audio than it did to the reviewers who read it on paper because I thought it was a wonderful and heartwarming story about two very likable journalists who find love and healing in the face of war's tragedies. Secondary characters added further depth and interest, as do the detailed settings and the journalist's eyewitness descriptions of the more personal side of war. Highly recommended.

MAGNIFICENT!

I don't know why the other reviewers though it was a horrible book. It was absolutely captivating! I was immediately enthralled in the story, and the has such a profound message.

I don't agree

I'm writing this review because I don't agree with the current reviews of this book on the web site. I read this book in one day. I was never bored. The story was well told and the characters were really likeable.

A Good Read

I first bought this book and then read the reviews. I was disappointed when I read them; I thought I had wasted my money. But when I read the book I couldn't understand why so many people didn't like it. Reading a book written in first person instead of third was different but I found that I liked it. It was almost like Val had written a long letter to me telling me about her life. As for the conflict with her mother and brother, I didn't think it was overwritten. After all if you are telling someone about your life you will more than likely tell more details than if someone else was telling your story. They wouldn't know everything to tell. I felt sorry for Val when she found out about Tony's deception, and I don't know if I'd feel the same way had this book been written third person. You must have an open mind when you read this as there aren't a lot of books written in this style. I haven't read but one other book by this author so I can't really compare this book to her others but I really don't think that is too fair to do considering this was written in a different style. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

infinitely-American photojournalist sees it all great book!

The young American photojournalist on the frontlines, is actually you! the review says it is clear that Tony was still married and Val never knew. Well, She lives in New York City with her husband, the producer, so everything can happen. the book filled with inspirational examples infinitely more appealing than those sterile books telling us how to be perfect.
