FROM THE BACK COVER: "I'll be perfectly frank with you, Kim," Ursula said with calm deliberation. "Why don't you give up? Go back where you came from and leave Adam alone. Can't you see he desparately wants his freedom?" Kim stared at Ursula in stunned silence, then felt anger rising. Ursula wanted her to go, for that would leave the field clear for her. Well, Kim decided, if Adam wants his freedom, he can say so. She wasn't going to run off like a scared rabbit!" COMMENTS: Adam Granger was a research scientist who was blinded as a result of a laboratory accident. Kim Harvey was a small town girl who had recently lost her father and her aunt, and she was about to leave her village and seek a life in the city. Adam had retreated to his seaside cottage to adjust to his new life and met Kim accidentally while trying to learn to walk the paths near his home on his own. Kim's father had been blind, and she was able to help him adjust to his blindness without offering him pity. Strongly attracted to Kim, he proposes and the two marry. Together, they return to Adam's home in Cape Town and he is able, with visual assistance from his coworkers, to return to the highly classified research project that he was working on prior to the accident. Enter old girlfriend Ursula Bennett. Ursula was Adam's assistant before the accident and knew his work better than anyone. She was also his old girlfriend who had a hard time adjusting to the fact that he married someone else. Using work as an excuse to keep Adam late at the office, and often following him home to work with him in his study, she effectively widened the gap between him and Kim. Kim's imaginative way of making Adam "see" her was classic, I thought. Will Ursula manage to separate the two before they declare their love for each other? Will a dangerous operation restore Adam's eyesight, and, if so, will he love and stay with Kim or be lured away by Ursula's classic beauty? I urge you to get this book and find out! Published in 1977, this book is a little dated, but I have a first edition paperback, and it has been on my "KEEPER" shelf for nearly 30 years. But do stories of true love EVER grow "old"? An "older" and "softer" romance, Where Seagulls Cry is surprisingly interesting and well written, proving once again that, no matter what the age, true love conquers all.
