The predators' focus on age thirteen is deliberate it marks both a legal boundary in many cultural contexts and a psychological obsession with newly developing girls. The girls' sense of powerlessness is significant (reporting often causes family upheaval, financial hardship, disbelief, and accusations against the girl), but in this story, strength emerges from her growing solidarity with other girls. The story begins with survival and tough times. It then shifts to Angelina's need to fight back and she does.
