Book Overview

Updated third edition offers sensitive advice and genuine understanding for teens coping with grief and loss.

The death of a friend is a wrenching event for anyone at any age and can spark feelings that range from sadness to guilt to anxiety. Teenagers especially need help coping with grief and loss. This sensitive book answers questions grieving teens often have, like "How should I be acting?" "How long will this last?" and "What if I can't handle my grief on my own?" The book also addresses the complicated emotions that can accompany the death of an acquaintance, as opposed to a close friend. The advice is gentle, non-preachy, and compassionate; recommended for parents and teachers of teens who have experienced a painful loss.

This updated edition of a classic resource includes new quotes from teens as well as insights into losing a friend or an acquaintance in a school shooting or through other violence. The book also features updated resources and recommended reading, including information on suicide hotlines and other support for anyone in crisis.

It helped. A LOT.

I just recently lost a close friend to a car accident and reading this book made me feel like I wasn't alone. So many of the teen quotes from the book were exactly what I was thinking. A lot of the things the book said showed me that I wasn't alone and that so many people were feeling the same thing. I'm passing the book around to friends who've also shared the same loss. I suggest this book to ANYONE who's suffered a loss, of a friend, a parent, a lover, a sibling, a son or daughter, just any loss. It really helped and I'm glad there's a book like this out there.

The questions they're afraid to ask...

A simple book, just the right length, that answers all the questions teens have at this difficult time... plus the questions they are too scared to ask. With quotes from other teens, feelings and facts, permission to feel, to cry, to be scared, and most importantly, permission to go on.This book is excellent for teens, pre-teens, and even adults facing the death of a friend.

Well-written

My neice lost a best friend. Both were l7 at the time. I ordered this book for her to read. Well- written and to the point.

excellent

This book is welcome as a quick read for students who are grieving. There is a real need for books on grief, especially how children cope with grief, because it often manifests in ways that are different from adult grief.

A must-read for any teen who has lost a friend!

This book reassures teens who have lost a friend that the "feelings" they are experiencing are normal and expected in the grief process. Dr. Gootman gets this message across in a compassionate manner. The book is short and easy-to-read. Its message is one of comfort and understanding. This book should be in the library of every youth minister and guidance counselor.
