What The Snow Kept: Poems from a Deployment
In February 2010, a chain of avalanches closed the Salang Pass in the mountains north of Kabul, burying miles of highway and thousands of travelers in the cold. Rescuers dug for days. Some of the buried came out alive. Many did not.
What the Snow Kept moves through that disaster and the deployment around it, told in the voice of an Army flight medic learning to carry more than one person at a time. These are quiet, exact poems about the work of keeping people alive and the cost of it: a leaving at an airfield before dawn, a triage that spills into the open where everyone can see it, a road under fire south of Ghazni, and the long question that waits at the door when the tour is finally over.
