There is a House on a tidal island where the drowned are kept, and a law posted at its door. A year ago the law did its kindest cruelty: it freed a warden - bought out of nineteen bound years with every memory a woman held of him. The freed forget the House entire. Two days from salt water, Hale mends harness in a hill town that believes he came from the other coast. He is all right. But he sets out two cups every morning and cannot say for whom. He keeps both chairs turned to a window that faces the wrong sea. And night after night he wakes - most of an hour later each time, like something with a clock in it - to stand at the dark glass, findable.
