The Perfect Book for the beach (or jail cell)

I'm an enormous comedy fan and I picked this up after learning that Ricky Gervais was considering playing the part of Gary Glitter in a film version of this book. Not quite sure what to expect at first, I started tittering from the first few pages and the laughs just got louder. And at the same time I was being serupticiously educated about Cuba without knowing it. This book really paints a vivid picture and in spite of the recommendations to contrary, it really inspired me to want to see Cuba for myself. Well, there or Somalia. (Quite unlike Bill Bryson who makes me dream of cream tea and the Isle of Wight for some reason.) This is a terrific read and highly recommended. If you're going to Cuba and you don't pack this book in your suitcase, then quite frankly, you're an idiot. Every other book I've read covering the island (and I've started reading more since this one got me going) is either Castro / Revolution obsessed or misty and romantic, all cigars and salsa. 'What I did in Cuba' has Gary Glitter in it. Now, how many books on Latin America can you say that about?

Fantastic Book!

A concise and sometimes hysterical travelogue of what should have been a short trouble free trip in Fidel Castro's Cuba during what was known as the 'Special Period'. What makes this tale a little more special is that the author is taking the trip with Gary Glitter and Betty Boo. Pop icons, decades apart and here they are all getting lost in socialist Latin America together. I really wasn't expecting too, but I love, love, loved this book. Short and easy to read, I found myself really getting immersed in it. Stunning location descriptions from Havana to Trinidad, informative and very, very funny. It makes you wonder how on earth do all these things happen to one person! If you like the styles of Bill Bryson, Tony Hawks, Danny Wallace or Tim Moore as I do, you'll love this book too. And if you're going to Cuba, this book is as good as any Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. Buy it now.
