"What Comes Next?" is a three-volume series presenting a detailed critique of contemporary capitalism. It explores the possibility of a practical alternative - a "system upgrade" - drawing on our innate disposition towards mutual aid. This will be a post-money society based on voluntary work and the free distribution of goods Volume One looks at capitalism's origins and its multiple impacts. This system has long passed its "sell-by" date. Most work in today's money-based economy is socially useless. It needlessly reinforces scarcity by siphoning labour and resources away from socially useful production. Once we begin to think outside the box, a more rational and humane alternative to the capitalist money system becomes obvious - and irresistible. The author was born in South Africa, studied anthropology and geography at University College London, and now lives in southern Spain.
