"Welcome to Sunny Australia " is the story of a family's escape from the communist regime during the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Told from the viewpoint of the eldest child, from the age of 13 to early adulthood, the story follows the family through refugee camps in Austria and migrant camps in Australia, to their destination in suburban Melbourne. The story tells the reader about the ups and downs that the family experienced in their new country, as they tried to adapt to strange customs and a new, foreign language. It is, ultimately, a story about the importance of family, resilience and optimism in the face of sometimes overwhelming obstacles.
