Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going loosing weight is the prevailing message of this quick moving, easy to read book. It is NOT a diet guide. Instead, it provides medical information and inspirational stories that let you know you're not out there fighting with your weight alone. The goal of the book is to take 10 diet myths, or 10 things that people tell themselves about dieting, and gently peel away the fallacies to reveal the truth. It refreshing, comforting, and motivational. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was it is not a Weight Watchers guide. It leaves you at the end with just the loosest information of what Weight Watchers is, and doesn't tell you how to get started, just to join. Well, it worked on me. I'm waiting for my In Home kit, but this book isn't a sales tool, it's just a nice guide to get you started on whatever path you decide to take. Recommended for those who are trying to loose weight, or those who have already lost and are looking for motivation on staying healthy.

Much better than I expected!

I've read every weight loss book you can think of and so when I began this book I thought that I'd find the same old thing but I was pleasantly surprised! I also thought it would be a big advertisement for the Weight Watchers program, but I didn't find that either. Mostly, I liked the scientific information and the way the book dispelled so many of the current fads or myths about how to loose weight. I am re-reading it again because it had so much to offer. The only downside I found to this book were the personal triumph stories. I found them not detailed enough to be compelling. Often I found myself wondering the age, number of pounds lost, and how they did it, but this detail was usually left out. Regardless, the overall book was excellent and I would highly recommend it for anyone who's confused or disillutioned with all the conflicting and confusing weight loss advise out there. This book offers solid scientific information that is very practical.

Smart and Informative

This is an excellent book, authored by experts in the field of weight management. Each chapter selects a particular diet myth and addresses it from a scientific and practical point of view. For example, there is a chapter about the myth of not bothering to lose weight anymore because it never lasts anyway. This chapter explains the health impact of carrying around extra weight, and intersperses true stories of people who have lost weight and kept it off. The inspirational stories in this book come from Weight Watchers Lifetime Members. This is not a fad diet book, and it does not offer meal plans and "secrets." This is an informative, intelligent, and well-researched book that will help you find your way to lasting weight loss.

Excellent insight into why diets don't work

Kudos to Weight Watchers and Dr. James Rippe for putting together a remarkable book that breaks down the science of weight loss and sheds light on all the ways we sabotage ourselves in our ignorance of what losing weight for good is really about. This is the only book out there that deals with maintenance, that pesky time after the initial weight loss that most fad diets and books in the market completely ignore or all but skim over. This book touches on some heavy myths that I recognized as I read. I've bought into so many of these myths not knowing that I was setting myself up for failure. Fortunately, I found this book and although I'm not following Weight Watchers as my lifestyle plan, I have used the information to arm myself. The book includes inspiring stories from Weight Watchers members as well as useful tips on everything from eating healthy while traveling to finding the best physical activity to incorporate into your new lifestyle. An excellent book.

Real Science

It's time we stopped fooling ourselves. Weight loss is a lifetime struggle. Diets that focus on restricting food until we reach our magic goal weight will not work long term. Magical thinking will not work even in the short term. The message of this book is that weight loss is a product of reducing caloric intake below caloric expenditure. It focuses on real science and hard data. I found it extremely helpful in overcoming psychological barriers to weight loss. It also helped me understand the importance of a life long commitment to weight loss and healthy living. If you want real facts instead of advertising fluff, this book is for you.
