A complete and authoritative reference on terrorism avoidance and survival. Written by a psychologist who taught terrorism-awareness and captivity-survival at the U.S. Navy's survival school. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book has become a little dated given the "new terrorism". The books description of the roles that hostages must play during different phases of a hostage crisis are still sound. The only caveat is if you have been abducted by a group like Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn, more commonly referred to as Al-Qaeda of Mesopotamia or Al-Qaeda in Iraq, you are not in a hostage crisis. In such a case you are a victim of a homicide that has not happened yet. Your only hope is escape or rescue....both pretty unlikely. For more on modern terrorists I would recommend Negotiating Hostage Crises with the New Terrorists (Psi Classics of the Counterinsurgency Era)
Nice Introduction to Terrorism

Dr. Derrer does an excellent job of providing a concise yet comprehensive overview of the psychological aspects of terrorism and the Stockholm Syndrome. It should, however, be pointed out that his suggestions concerning how one should respond to aircraft hijackings is now dated (given the events of 9/11/01) but this should not deter one from acquiring this work. I wish Dr. Derrer would update and expand this original edition.
